Episode Description

In this tense and atmospheric episode of Gunsmoke, Harry Pope, a recent widower from Boston, is convinced that his isolated prairie farm is being surrounded by hostile Indians at night. Terrified by the noises he hears in the darkness, Harry shoots what he believes is an intruder—only to discover that he's killed a cowboy, not an Indian. The situation reveals deeper truths about fear, isolation, and the lengths a man will go to protect himself in the dangerous frontier. Marshal Matt Dillon and Chester are called in to investigate, but the truth behind the strange happenings on Harry’s farm is more complex than they first thought. Matt's calming presence and careful questioning help unravel the mystery, but can he stop the spiral of paranoia that has gripped Harry Pope before things get even worse? Featuring a suspenseful script by John Meston and the direction of Norman Macdonnell, Grass explores the psychological toll that life on the frontier can take, as well as the devastating consequences of unchecked fear.
