Episode Description

Originally Aired: June 3, 1936 In Cavalcade of America #35, "Songs of Home," the episode traces the poignant story of John Howard Payne, who wrote the most beloved American home song despite never having a permanent home of his own. Beginning with his childhood in East Hampton, Long Island, the narrative follows young Payne as he arrives at Union College, where Dr. Knox discovers the boy's early attempts at poetry expressing his homesickness. Despite showing promise as a poet and scholar, Payne pursues his dream of becoming an actor, though his career proves inconsistent and marked by extravagance. The drama builds to a pivotal moment in 1823 at London's Covent Garden Theatre, where theater manager Charles Kemble anxiously awaits a song for Payne's play "Clary, or The Maid of Milan." Payne arrives with composer Henry Bishop, presenting lyrics he wrote while living in a Paris garret, remembering his childhood cottage. Miss Tree sings the new composition for the first time, and "Home, Sweet Home" is born. The episode follows Payne's later years as he leaves the theater, advocates for American Indians, and ultimately accepts an appointment as Consul General to Tunis, remaining a wanderer even as his immortal song celebrates the very permanence he never found.
