Chips for the Fish Monger

A nervous Frenchman, Monsieur Paul Duclair, seeks assistance from a London employment agency to hire a night watchman for a dead Greenland whale he's exhibiting. He needs someone of impeccable integrity to prevent vandalism and to pump formaldehyde into the preserved whale. Cannon, an employee at the agency, takes the job but soon discovers two Russian dancers hiding inside the whale, who were trying to escape their homeland while fearing the Russian secret police. They accidentally stumble upon a corpse inside the whale, leading to a series of frantic decisions. Cannon decides to protect the dancers while contacting the authorities, but as the situation escalates, a fire allegedly set by the watchman destroys the exhibit, leaving no evidence of the murder that took place. Eventually, they uncover that Duclair, who had been posing as a caretaker, had killed the original owner to gain access to the insurance money and planned to dispose of the body with the whale. The police, tipped off by Cannon, apprehend Duclair, exposing the twisted plot and allowing the dancers to remain safe in England.
