A Blackjack for a Black Leg

A transport strike has crippled the Midlands and Southern County, prompting businessman Johnson Cartwright to seek help to get his truck, Truck 64, through to Birmingham. He enlists Robby Mason from Assignments Unlimited, who arranges for a driver, Crash Carson. To circumvent the strike, the truck must be legally driven as an owner-driven vehicle, which involves transferring ownership papers to Carson. Carson faces hostility from picketers but initially manages to deliver the load. He later gets attacked and hospitalized by a thug, which raises suspicions about the true nature of the cargo. After recovery, Carson and Mason deduce that the attack might have been linked to a larger operation involving smuggling goods from a sailing lugger offshore. When Mason sends another driver, Cannon, with a female companion, Ruby Long, they discover a scheme involving lead and gold bullion. Cannon's suspicions and investigation lead to the unveiling of an illegal operation, culminating in a police sting that captures the gang responsible for the thefts. The story concludes with the aftermath of the investigation and Carson’s encounter with the criminal elements at play.
