Saved by the Gong

Mr. Merriweather seeks to protect a valuable grandfather clock he's displaying in his shop, worth two thousand guineas, by hiring a night watchman from Assignments Unlimited. Cannon, the night watchman, discovers that several people are interested in the clock, including a woman named Jane Fenton and an antique dealer named Trig, who attempt to examine it after hours. After interaction with Cannon, they leave abruptly without revealing their true intentions. When a man named Lord Blendstoke arrives looking for lost papers, he, Cannon, and Merriweather uncover a ledger that suggests the clock might hide jewels once belonging to the Duchess of Pionte. This leads them to speculate about the clock's contents. However, their investigation is interrupted by police who take them in for questioning, but they are soon released. Upon returning to the shop, they discover that the clock has been vandalized, but Cannon ingeniously identifies a hidden compartment in the pendulum containing the missing jewels, thus revealing that the story is one of unexpected treasure discovered just in time, aptly titled "Saved by the Gong."
