A distressed woman named Ruth Reynolds approaches a private investigator, Mr. Mason, seeking help for her husband, Ian, who is deeply depressed and threatening to kill himself and their three-year-old son, John. Ian, a Korean War veteran, struggles with the consequences of the war and believes it is best for John not to face the world. Mason sends Cannon, a man with a similar military background, to talk to Ian. After a tense exchange, Ian, armed and barricaded in their apartment, threatens violence. Cannon attempts to reason with him, emphasizing the importance of life and the innocence of children like John.
