The Temporary Husband

Johanna Wetherby expresses her worries to her butler, Benjamin, about a letter from Rodney Fowler Brown, an Englishman she befriended while on holiday in Italy. She reveals that she fabricated a story about being married to discourage Rodney's romantic advances, but now he is coming to England to claim her. Benjamin finds her request for a suitable man to pose as a husband complicated, leading to the hiring of Marmaduke Bray, a gentle but strong man. Meanwhile, Rodney arrives in London seeking Johanna, and during a tense confrontation in her home, a young man named Lester Dobson, who had been manipulated by Rodney, mistakenly attempts to kill his perceived rival. In an unexpected twist, Lester ends up shooting Rodney instead, believing he was following through on a misguided directive to prove his manhood. The situation culminates in chaos as Johanna's secrets unravel and the true nature of the relationships comes to light.
